Chorionic Gonadotrophin, ACTH, and the Adrenal-Hyaluronidase Relationship *

چکیده
It has been shown that either adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) or the 11-oxygenated adrenal cortical steroids inhibit the hyaluronidaseenhanced spreading phenomenon in the rabbit and in the mouse.q 8 In view of the favorable influence of pregnancy on certain of the collagen diseases, it was of interest to determine whether chorionic gonadotrophin had any influence on this phenomenon. This was found to be the case, but in the course of these investigations it became apparent that the inhibition produced by this agent was probably due, not to the gonad-stimulating principle, but to a contaminant which exhibited many of the properties previously associated with ACTH from pituitary tissue. While this work was in progress, Jailer and Knowlton' published a paper in which the presence of ACTH-like activity in extracts of placenta was indicated. The present study is to be regarded as of a preliminary nature since many points concerning the nature of the adrenal cortical stimulating principle remain to be clarified.

Further Studies on Placental ACTH, Pituitary, and Adrenal-Hyaluronidase Relations
During the past several years, an investigation has been made of the relationships between various hormones of the adrenal cortex, the enzyme hyaluronidase, and its substrate hyaluronic acid, with specific reference to tissue permeability and collagen diseases. As the studies progressed, several problems were investigated: (i) which fractions of the adrenal cortex were responsible for the resul...
متن کاملIdentification of ACTH in Human Placental Tissue *
Studies from the laboratory have revealed the presence of ACTH activity in extracts of pregnancy urine which had been heat-treated to destroy gonadotrophic activity.7 These observations led to the investigation of placental extracts to ascertain whether the source of the ACTH activity was the placenta rather than the pituitary gland. Certain of the results obtained are reported in this paper. A...

متن کاملThe effect of equine chorionic gonadotrophin (ecg) injection combined with prostaglandin F2α (pGF2α) and gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) treatment on reproductive performance of Zandi ewes during non-breeding season
In this study, we aimed to investigate reproductive performance in estrus-induced Zandi ewes treated with equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) injection in combination with prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α)and gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) during non-breeding season. The estrous cycle was synchronized using controlled internal drug release (CIDR) for 12 days. The ewes were randomly assigned to...
متن کاملHormonal Changes in Pregnancy
Because of the time factor involved, it would be an impossible task to present the vast body of biochemical information accumulated during the last decade on the endocrine aspects of pregnancy. However, certain key points can be made concerning the feto-placental unit and the hormone levels and effects in normal gestation. These concepts will be discussed not merely for their academic value, bu...
